Awareness Technology Inc has acquired Bristol-based Screen Time Labs Limited, creators of software that enables parents to manage the how much time their kids spend on their tablets and smartphones, for an undisclosed sum.
Founder Steve Vangasse came up with the idea after experiencing the usual parent-based frustrations when it came to getting his kids away from their shiny new iPads: “When spring came round they were too glued to tablets to go and play outdoors.” He explains “As I was a developer I fancied having a go at writing an app and developing software to manage the amount of time they spent playing MineCraft and other games.”
The result: Screen Time. Currently a team of 15, they are expecting to double that in the next 12 months. Steve will remain CEO of Screen Time as the business continues to invest in its Bristol team and grow its market share.
Awareness Technologies is a privately-held security software company based in Westport, Connecticut. Brad Miller, CEO at Awareness Technologies said “We are thrilled to join forces with Screen Time Labs”. “While our WebWatcher monitoring solution empowers parents to ensure their child’s online safety by monitoring their online activity, we also see parents challenged with the ability to control the amount of screen time their children have access to. This alliance with Screen Time Labs will allow us to offer parents the ability to manage their kids’ screen time allowance from any location.”
Commenting on the sale Steve Vangasse said “We are excited to partner with Awareness Technologies. Together, we hope to help parents to manage a healthy screen time balance and create a safe online experience.”
Nathan Morgan, Director at Shaw & Co. who advised founder Screen Time Steve Vangasse on the deal said “Screen Time Labs is testament to the high calibre of technology businesses coming out of Bristol at the moment. This deal is a great result for Steve and the team who now have the opportunity to drive further growth globally, particularly in US markets where they have already experienced phenomenal success to date.”
Philip Edmonds at Roxburgh Milkins, who advised founder Steve Vangasse and a handful of employee shareholders, said “Screen Time Labs is a great success story: of spotting an opportunity through real life experiences, producing a great product to address that opportunity, and honing and perfecting that product until it becomes the market-leader. It was a pleasure to work with Steve and the team on this transaction and we're all excited to see how Screen Time Labs flourishes with the added reach which Awareness brings to the table.”
